The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) announced today that Tom Moses, executive vice president and chief laboratory and research officer, has decided to leave the institute after almost 50 years of service.

GIA (Gemological Institute of America), together with the Gianmaria Buccellati Foundation, presented the ninth annual Gianmaria Buccellati Foundation Award for Excellence in Jewelry Design on February 6, 2026, to GIA Carlsbad graduate Catherine “Cathy” Aulick.

George Rossman, a member of the GIA Board of Governors from 1995 to 2007 and professor of mineralogy, emeritus, at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), passed away on February 6 at age 81.

GIA will launch redesigned colored stones reports and new services on January 1, 2026.

During the GIA Board of Governors meeting in early November at the Institute’s headquarters in Carlsbad, CA, the Institute honored Susan M. Jacques with its highest honor, the Richard T. Liddicoat Award for Distinguished Achievement.

The board of directors of GIA India Laboratory Pvt. Ltd. (GIA India) has appointed Amit Pratihari as managing director, responsible for all aspects of GIA India’s gemological laboratories in Mumbai and Surat, as well as the GIA India school in Mumbai.

In July 2025, staff from GIA, including GIA Executive Vice President and Chief Research and Laboratory Officer Tom Moses and Vice President of Research and Development Dr. Wuyi Wang, examined a rough diamond weighing 2,488.32 carats
